40 women were murdered by men in the month of June 2016 in Turkey, reported the association of “Platform to Stop Women Murders.”
The organization keeps track of assaults against women with the aim to prevent these assaults and murders.
The report indicated that the sexual assaults and child abuse continue across the country.
The report stated, “Every month we keep on seeing new cases involving violence against women reported in the media. While the murders against women are processed without a need of a complaint, sexual violence or assaults against children need a complaint to be investigated. For this reason, it is very hard to gather numbers on these types of assaults.” The report also showed that the government authorities that were tasked to investigate such violence consistently failed to do so.
The motive of the 8 murders against women was classified as “suspicious.” 21 murder cases failed to identify the reason. The report listed, “2 women were murdered for economic reasons. 9 were killed because they wanted divorce or refused to get back together or refused to become friends with a stranger, in short, they were murdered due to trying to determine their own lives.”
The perpetrators of the 14 murders out of 40 cases in June have not been identified. 12 women were killed by their husbands, 3 by their ex-husbands, 2 by their ex-boyfriends, 2 by their neighbors, 1 by her boyfriend, 1 by her son, 1 by brother-in-law, 1 by her brother, 1 by her ex-son-in-law, 1 by her father and 1 by the family of her ex-son-in-law.
