Cengiz Akkaya was found to possess a picture of Demirtaş he had cut out from a daily newspaper in his prison ward. He had hidden the picture of his legal party’s president under his bed
Cengiz Akkaya is one of the leaders of HDP, the People’s Democratic Party. He is in prison like many other HDP representatives and party officials. HDP is the only meaningful opposition to the ruling AKP because it alone promotes a change that is also at the ideological level, apart from all the other opposition parties.
For this reason, and also for being considered a Kurdish supported party, HDP is getting the brunt of all attacks both from the ruling and the main opposition party. The ruling AKP considers HDP a serious threat and because the Kurds and progressives in the party expose and challenge their extreme corruption, ideological bankruptcy, close ties to international capitalist organizations, its own fascist organization and close ties to the neo-Nazi organizations. The criticisms HDP brings to the ruling AKP are serious, logical, based on evidence, but mostly, devastating. Since HDP is also considered a Kurdish party, the main opposition, traditional, nationalist, CHP party also targets HDP since Kurds are not a recognized minority in modern Turkey even though they represent upward to 25% of the entire nation with different language and ethnic roots.
As the dictatorship of the AKP and its leader Erdoğan intensified in the recent years, HDP saw its municipalities taken over by the government by force and put under stewardships. Many of these municipalities led by elected HDP representatives had open and public records of expenditures and purchases to prevent corruption. However, after the government’s stewardship most of them ended up losing their assets and under huge debts as the “stewards” immediately got involved in corruption, extravagant expenses and unnecessary purchases from government friendly corporations. The local HDP mayors were mostly imprisoned with trumped up charges as well as party leaders.
Cengiz Akkaya is one of these HDP party officials from Isparta province. Another jailed HDP leader is the HDP’s former President Selahattin Demirtaş. Demirtaş has been in prison for the last nearly two years, most of spent not even knowing why he has been jailed. His tremendous popularity is enough threat for the government to eliminate him by throwing him into prison, for something, anything, ridiculous or not. This boosted the already huge popularity of this Kurdish HDP leader.
Cengiz Akkaya was found to possess a picture of Demirtaş he had cut out from a daily newspaper in his prison ward. He had hidden the picture of his legal party’s former president under his bed.
In Turkey where even a simple criticism of Erdoğan is considered “an insult against the president” which is punishable with a prison term, being caught with the picture of the very popular president of a legal political party is not a normal, simple act. The prison officials immediately hit Akkaya with a month long solitary confinement in a small cell.
This decision has been appealed. However, Mr. Akkaya is already serving time in his solitary cell.
